As of January 1, 2019, five (5) new Joint Commission elements of performance (EPs) focused on fluoroscopy will become effective. The new requirements are applicable to accredited ambulatory care (AHC) organizations, office-based surgery (OBS) practices, and hospital organizations that provide fluoroscopy services to their patients. Designed to enhance the provision of safe, high-quality fluoroscopy services, the revisions clarify expectations and increase awareness of radiation exposure risks when using this imaging modality. The Joint Commission environment of care, (EC.02.04.04 and HR .01.05.03) are fluoroscopy standards which necessitate ongoing education and annual training for individuals using fluoroscopy.

The new fluoroscopy changes are posted on The Joint Commission website and will be published in AHC and OBS accreditation manuals this fall.

California Regulation 17 CCR 30403 requires that all licentiates of the healing arts obtain 4 of the 10 CE credit hours required in radiation safety for the clinical use of fluoroscopy in the two years immediately preceding the expiration date of their California Fluoroscopy Supervisor and Operator Permit.

This Texas rule requires physicians, other than radiologists and radiation oncologists, and non-physicians that have been delegated authority to complete 8 hours of CME in radiation safety awareness training prior to performing Fluoroscopically Guided Interventional procedures. The enforcement of the rule has been suspended, however the rule is still in effect.

Our Radiation Safety Awareness Training course is designed to make it easy for you to meet all the required Colorado Fluoroscopy rules on living humans, Part 2, 2.6.1.5 at your own pace. The course is composed of eight hours of comprehensive training specific to the new requirements for individuals operating fluoroscopic equipment. All of the following required topics are thoroughly covered; 1. Fundamental principles of radiation protection; 2. Biological effects of ionizing radiation; 3. Safe operation of fluoroscopy equipment for each mode of operation to be used; 4. Dose reduction techniques for fluoroscopy; and 5. Applicable radiation regulations."

The Iowa Board of Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners (ARNP) requires ARNPs who supervise the use of fluoroscopic equipment to complete appropriate education and continued annual radiological safety updates as defined in rule 655-7.1(152). The annual radiation safety course must include at a minimum; time, dose, distance, shielding and the effects of radiation.

Our 8 hour course and 2 hour supplement meet the Alaska requirements for “All operators of medical fluoroscopic equipment shall receive a minimum of ten hours instruction in the safe operation of the fluoroscope” as defined in 7 AAC 18.420(c). This is in addition to the basic requirement for an individual to receive the basic operator training specified in 7 AAC 18.420(a) and (b).
